Your Guide to Writing Venice

Demi Anter is an award-winning writer and performer, with work spanning poetry, creative nonfiction, script- and playwriting. Her teaching focuses on the power of writing from personal experience, and she regularly teaches for institutions around the world, including London’s Irish Cultural Centre and the Royal National Theatre. She has been published in the US, Europe, and the UK by Magma, Banshee, and The Times, and has performed at Glastonbury Festival, Bristol Old Vic, Poetry Ireland, and more.

In 2023, she and Rory MacLean (Berlin: Imagine a City) co-presented "Bowie in Berlin" at the inaugural Sherborne Travel Writing Festival, alongside the UK's most prominent travel writers. She developed her course “Writing Berlin” later that year, which regularly sells out. Her poetry collection Small Machine, was published by Write Bloody UK in 2022. Chanel Miller called it, "Strikingly luminous and soothing." Musa Okwonga called it, "Tender, visceral, beautifully vulnerable."

Frequently Asked Questions

If your question is not answered, please do not hesitate to contact Demi directly.

  • You do not need to be a writer, professionally or otherwise, but should have an interest in writing and reading about Venice. The workshop is open to participants of diverse backgrounds, and has attracted a wide range of experience levels. We welcome beginners and anyone with curiosity!

  • The week is designed to give time for exploring Venice, together and solo, as well as to reading and analyzing texts connected to Venice and “place writing,” and, of course, writing your own work. We aim to create a good balance between unstructured time to think and explore, as well as more structured time and exercises to guide and inspire your writing.

  • Early December in Venice is typically a beautiful time to visit the city. Temperatures are cooler and layers are recommended, as well as an umbrella or raincoat in case of rain. We also recommend bringing good walking shoes since we will spend a lot of time exploring the city on foot.

  • No, the group accommodation is optional. If you wish to book separately, we recommend finding an option in Dorsoduro so you are near the workshop location.

  • Yes! To pay by installments, please contact Demi directly. Installment payment can be done only through direct bank transfer after invoicing.

  • Yes! Please send Demi a message to share any accessibility requirements so that they can be addressed in advance of the workshop.

Note that the group accommodations and the workshop space have sets of stairs and no elevator. Several parts of the workshop involve long walks around the city.

  • There are two airports located conveniently near Venice: Marco Polo (nearer to the island) and Treviso. Affordable shuttles are available from both, while a more expensive water taxi is available from Marco Polo.

Those coming by train may arrive directly on the island at Venezia Santa Lucia.

More detailed directions to the accommodations and workshop space will be shared with participants nearer to December.

  • The workshop will take place with a minimum of five participants and a maximum of ten participants. Participants will be informed as soon as the minimum is reached.

  • Individual refunds are not possible under any circumstances.

If the workshop is cancelled, all participants will be refunded the workshop fee in full, and group accommodation fees will be refunded in full.

Please note that if the workshop is cancelled, expenses such as flights and independent accommodation costs (accommodation outside of the group accommodation) will not be reimbursed.
